Au moment où notre vieille nation morose va peut-être réélire notre catastrophe nationale et nous enfoncer dans une longue période de barbarie, voire de guerre civile et de cannibalisme (c'est une légère exagération), il y a quand même encore le hégélien Francis Fukuyama (oui, celui de la "Fin de l'Histoire" ou du livre récent sur l'origine de l'Etat de droit) qui défend le "Modèle Français" contre le Modèle britannique et le Sang Germanique.

French national identity is in one sense the least problematic because there is one republican tradition coming out of the Revolution, a tradition that is laique that treats citizens equally.

I do think for many reasons that the republican, liberal political identity that France is promoting is the model that needs to be followed by other countries. Bassam Tibi, who is a scholar at Göttingen University, is the inventor of the term Leitkultur, which was then later used by the Christian Democrats in Germany as a definition of what they wanted to immigrants to assimilate to. Leitkultur was misused but he has a very similar idea in the back of his head as French republicanism.

By contrast, the British have had the worst experience because in a sense they have not addressed the question of national identity at all and they have not tried to form a political identity that would accommodate people with very different religious and cultural backgrounds.

Mais avant de se réjouir trop vite de ce ton qui va conformément à notre propre vision républicaine, on doit se rappeler que Fukuyama (qui a eu des grand-parents internés par les autorités américaines pendant la Guerre) a fait de brèves études de littérature comparée dans les années 1970 à Paris. Il reflète peut-être donc peut-être plus notre propre Weltanschauung tout en paraissant paradoxal relativement à son propre contexte américain.
